May is Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) Awareness month! Our lives look so much different today than they did just a couple years ago when both boys were struggling with swallowing and GI disorders that led to PFD. Today, they consistently eat predictable meals and are at healthy weights. I will NEVER take this for granted.

Both boys were born with swallowing and GI disorders that made eating difficult, to say the least. Finn (8) endured years of intensive therapy, having his liquids thickened to avoid aspiration, and medical procedures. Even though he is at a healthy weight, he still suffers with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) today, eating only a few select meals. Reed (4) was in and out of the hospital with severe bouts of GI issues. I bottle fed him thickened formula through the night until he was three years old and ready to intake and able to keep down enough solid foods during the day to keep up his growth. I cannot accurately describe the heartache parents feel as they helplessly watch their children suffer.

I am so happy to report that we are nearing the end of our journey, but there are so many children and families currently enduring the hardest challenge of their lives as they navigate this rare and difficult disorder, often caused by underlying medical issues. The diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, thickening agents and specialized formulas, and years of required therapy to help these children is extremely expensive and often out-of-reach for those without private insurance.

I am a passionate volunteer for a wonderful organization, Feeding Matters, that assists families and children struggling with PFD and ARFID. Join me in making a real difference. Even a small donation can make a big impact in reaching my goal for Feeding Matters!
