The impact of feeding disorders isolates children and families. Help Feeding Matters, MATTER
Emerson's journey with feeding challenges has been a constant uphill battle, one that began from the moment she came into the world and continues to this day. Despite reassurances from medical professionals that she would eventually adjust, Emerson's difficulties persisted, leading to numerous hospitalizations and an ongoing struggle to get her to eat. It was only through the steadfast support of a remarkable feeding therapist, whom I had the privilege of meeting through my work, that we were able to push for a proper diagnosis. At just five months old, Emerson's path took a difficult turn as she required a nasogastric (NG) tube to assist with feeding—a solution necessitated by a complex array of genetic abnormalities and dysphagia. This marked the beginning of a series of challenges, culminating in the diagnosis of pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) and the eventual insertion of a gastrostomy tube (G-tube) to ensure her nutritional needs were met. However, what may seem like a straightforward solution belied the immense trials we faced along the way. It meant sacrificing precious moments with my other children, watching them miss out on the joys of childhood as their sister battled with her health. It meant enduring relentless stress, sleepless nights, and the constant anguish of witnessing Emerson's struggle to perform a basic human function—eating. The burden of guilt for being unable to provide for my child weighed heavily on me, as did the overwhelming sense of helplessness in the face of her suffering. It was a lonely journey until I discovered Feeding Matters in 2019. This organization became our beacon of hope, offering not only practical assistance but also a supportive community of individuals who truly understood our struggles. With their guidance, Emerson managed to overcome PFD, though our challenges have since evolved into navigating Avoidant Restrictive Feeding Intake Disorder (ARFID).
Feeding Matters breathed new life into our family, restoring hope and empowering me to pay it forward by becoming a mentor to others facing similar struggles. Joining this incredible organization feels like answering a higher calling, allowing me to raise awareness, provide support, and spread encouragement to families in need.
Which is why I am asking for you to be a part of this journey so that Feeding Matters can continue to help and support families like my own. Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal!
